The city of
The city has an incredibly rich and volatile history and the impressive architecture embraces the various periods that influenced it. The Albaicin area is an old part of the city which provides you with a feeling for the past. Narrow cobbled streets and white washed houses are interspersed by numerous squares. This area was originally the old Arabic quarters of the city and is a delightful place to simply meander and enjoy the feel of a bygone era. The Arabs were forced out five centuries ago you but you can understand why they fought so strongly to remain here.
In Sacromonte you find the Gypsies. They came and settled here over 600 years ago and it is widely regarded as being one the places to give birth to flamenco dancing. There are numerous establishments around here where you can be entertained by gypsy woman dancing, complete with red roses in their mouths.
The nightlife is fantastic and there really is something for everyone. Cuisine is high on the menu with a mix of restaurants catering for any taste from traditional tapas to a huge choice from around the world. Around the city cafes, bars and nightclubs abound. A great way to sample the best Granada has to offer in Tapas is to go on a tour. Gayle Mackie runs Granada Tapas Tours and she will take you to the authentic places not generally known or found by those passing through the area.
